In this lesson, Steve Huston will start by identifying the basic shapes and 3D forms that make up the structure of the hand and convey gesture with the long axis curve. You will examine the connections and relationships between the parts of the hand, including the forearm, wrist, thumb, fingers, knuckles and tendons. Steve will then demonstrate a longer, toned drawing, describing light and shadow on the hand. Finally, you will apply this knowledge with timed pose drawings.

This lesson belongs to the course Constructive Hand Drawing. In this 2-week course, renowned artist Steve Huston will share his constructive approach to drawing hands. Steve will begin by explaining the gesture and structure of the hands, breaking them down into anatomical components, including the thumb, fingers, fingernails, wrist, and the connection of the hand to the forearm. Steve will then demonstrate how to use tone to depict light and shadow in hand drawings. You will also analyze the artwork of Old Masters to understand their use of simple forms and shapes, as well as the storytelling and conceptual ideas behind their art. Finally, you will apply these lessons in timed hand drawing sessions, accompanied by Steve’s approach to the assignment. By the end of this course, you will have a deeper understanding of the gesture and structure of the hand, enabling you to create dynamic and expressive hand drawings.
