Love the combo of shade massing and cross-hatching. Awesome.

I really like this page above me. It is one of your more successful ones: Clarity of forms/line, proportion, weight, balance. Please take some time to lay this one and the 2 before, side by side to compare and contrast.
Keep it up!
Hi Raven. Good job on those hands. You have a good sense of form going in the top middle/right and bottom ones. I actually like the bottom one!
For the top-left, try avoiding interior detail (wrinkles). Really look past that and get a sense of the proper shape of the hands.
Yeah, Steve mentions how Sargent may have exaggerated the neck (made it longer) on an old woman to satisfy the commission. Artists are always picking and choosing.
Good job on the interlock of the wrist to hand on the right.
More Carvaggio hand/arm breakdowns. Actually, the book only has a few pages on him. The rest are pages of different countries in Europe that followed the influence of him. Spain/Naples (Ribera, Velazquez, Luca Giordano), Manfrediana Methodus (Bartolomeo Manfredi, Simon Vouet <3), The Utrecht School, etc. All have equally amazing work to study from.
Cool. I like the change in making the figure more angular. Thrust reads better here.
@nick.lagrow Thanks man! Yeah, Steve always stresses structure so I keep it with no rendering, though a few have it. Eventually I’ll move on to rendering the forms properly. Practice practice!
And a Fourth of July portrait. A very loud night.
Light in the back could be massed in shade. 😉
Cool! Have fun in those classes! I assume it’s online? I started posting up my hand/arm studies if you’re interested. Cheers.
