Thanks Christopher! Much appreciated! 🙌 really your exactly right in that I need to be focusing on new things. In particular anatomy and light and shadow. I just don’t really know where to really start in those areas, and of course I end up staying in my comfort zone. But if I’m ever going to improve I must attack my deficiencies head on!! I have a few new things lined up for learning here soon which I think will help, thanks very much for your comments. 🙏
October 20, 2020 at 10:04 pm in reply to: 100 Day Challenge: Heads and Faces-planes/structure/proportion #847804Day 39: worked in a even bigger sketchbook today, trying a few out. Being able to draw bigger is really helpful in drawing from the shoulder, so that’s great. I really need to get a small incline thing for the sketchbook, I have a small desk, and stacking up books isn’t really the best haha.
I think drawing a bit bigger is very revealing with these figures. They are not looking their best. I was trying to use the overhand grip more which is at times uncomfortable For me, but the figures just look not right. Looking at them now it seems I’ve disregarded the pelvis. *facepalms*
October 20, 2020 at 12:18 am in reply to: 100 Day Challenge: Heads and Faces-planes/structure/proportion #842990Day 38: in a bit of a rut I believe, I did a decent amount of gestures, but they seemed to only get worse. So many not good things with these figures. Crap the sight of these faces brings me much pain, particularly the center one 😑. I’m forgetting all the basic construction for goodness sakes! Why is this happening! This is just frustrating that this Is the best I can come up with.

October 19, 2020 at 12:06 am in reply to: 100 Day Challenge: Heads and Faces-planes/structure/proportion #839141Day 37: finished a sketchbook I started on this challenge, so that’s cool! Today was pretty sketchy, drawing other artists, so there are some pretty ugly things here… But Matteo scalera’s work is like 👌🙌💯 so good.
these drawings are the result of getting through the last few sketchbook pages lol. Starting and finishing are never easy for me. This last page was in the new sketchbook, it’s certainly bigger than any of my past sketchbooks, so it’s a bit uncomfortable now. This last page certainly felt too forced, Was tired. But I think having to draw bigger will be of great benefit.
October 18, 2020 at 9:54 am in reply to: 100 Day Challenge: Heads and Faces-planes/structure/proportion #838213@marcolino yeeeees, of course! What a missed opportunity! Really I need the emphasis to be on long axis first. It’s too easy to get distracted by secondary rhythms before getting the biggest ideas first! Thanks much 🙏
and I do like occasionally making the floor grid, it’s fun, hopefully it helps make it more clear.
October 17, 2020 at 10:44 pm in reply to: 100 Day Challenge: Heads and Faces-planes/structure/proportion #835770Day 36: page 5! these figures feel pretty so-so, I really made the torso too long on that one! 😬 and cut off a head. I really need to do some men lol. New challenges, better structure. Would also like to give some clothes a shot again, more normal looking people ha. I’m very nearly through with this sketchbook and I just got some larger ones today, so the added space will certainly encourage me to draw bigger, which could be very helpful. And there’s a spaceman, because. And just don’t look at that random attempt at unconfident lazy shading… haven’t learned very much in that area yet, don’t really know where to start.

October 17, 2020 at 10:33 pm in reply to: 100 Day Challenge: Heads and Faces-planes/structure/proportion #835729Hey Marcolino thanks for the helpful tips, I’ll try and look for that video. These are not from imagination unfortunately, from reference. I’m not really going for the stylized look, i guess it’s just a result of my current level of understanding and ability. And sometimes it’s true I could probably be more observant to the reference haha.
October 16, 2020 at 10:41 pm in reply to: 100 Day Challenge: Heads and Faces-planes/structure/proportion #832939Day 35: well there’s certainly some faces, can’t say I’m too happy with them though. It’s no good, I have a shortage of confidence, get all tight, get real zoned into features, and don’t pay nearly enough attention to the whole, the big important structures, the connections, and It just turns into a mess. Lack of knowledge/understanding. I probably need more focus on the head itself from more angles, thats a whole other thing, and Simple structures of the skull. Just wasn’t feeling it today.
October 16, 2020 at 6:25 pm in reply to: 100 Day Challenge: Heads and Faces-planes/structure/proportion #831966Haha no no I was just referring to your support of my stuff haha, not at all meant negatively, I thank you for the high praise. looking at it now it’s not a very clear way to put it, my bad lol
October 16, 2020 at 10:45 am in reply to: 100 Day Challenge: Heads and Faces-planes/structure/proportion #831498Thanks very much Christopher, it’s certainly encouraging! Sometimes I look back at my older drawings and think that I’ve gotten boring! And I certainly need to challenge myself more in thinking structure/corners.🙌
while I appreciate your confidence, I wouldn’t say anyone is ahead of anybody here hahaha. We all have our own strong points and weak points, and there are countless methods of hopefully getting to the same place if that makes any sense!

October 16, 2020 at 10:35 am in reply to: 100 Day Challenge: Heads and Faces-planes/structure/proportion #831493Thanks so much marcolino! Coming from you it means a lot! I wasn’t using a timer, while I do try and make sure Im getting the most important big parts and movements in the fist minute or so, honestly I don’t really like the time limit lol, maybe somewhere around 6 min? Is that too long? Using a time limit occasionally would probably help in some ways.
As is apparent, I do struggle with making clear construction, finding clear corners! Putting it in Boxes! Hence this challenge, I guess on day 50 I’ll officially add figure construction lol. So I’ve noticed occasionally that things always kind of stay in the flat gestural zone. More mannequinization, defining the planes of the figure, it’s spatial position, 3D!! Not easy, much thinking! Just wrapping lines around like I do can leave things pretty vague. I’ll certainly try on work on this, thanks much. 🙏October 15, 2020 at 11:34 pm in reply to: 100 Day Challenge: Heads and Faces-planes/structure/proportion #830771Day 34: this might be cheating since it’s basically just figures but I decided to just focus on this and I ran out of stamina to do faces properly. I promise I’ll do some proper faces tomorrow!
i did some more of Spirit Of the Pose today, really good stuff. The first gestures are following along with Karl. I think my lack of knowledge shows itself in my seeming inability to really go past the quick sketch. One of my many big gaping holes of uncertainty.

October 14, 2020 at 11:45 pm in reply to: 100 Day Challenge: Heads and Faces-planes/structure/proportion #829506Day 33: I got my proko skull in!!! This is soooooo cool! Love it. Really actually ran out of time today, was pretty busy… not happy with these drawings, especially those two, gee wiz. Shows my lack of perspective understanding. Anyway I must sleep

October 14, 2020 at 11:11 am in reply to: Christopher’s 100 Day Challenge: All about process, shape and value #828861Hey Christopher, me again ha. I think I can relate to the feeling, being frustrated, each day is different. I just thought I’d share my two cents, take it for what you will, I hope I’m not assuming too much, I’m pretty much talking to myself here lol.
I don’t want to accuse you of ‘grinding’, all your work has certainly been quite valuable in building fundamental skill, you have put a tremendous amount of work in with the whole other 100 day challenge! and I think the improvement in the forms is clear. Tone is tricky, and I basically know nothing about it so your ahead of me haha.
I just know for me I can get discouraged and unenthused about drawing if I get too zoned into doing one thing. While being focused in on an Academic study is very important and can be very productive, motivating, and cause lots of improvement, I’ve come to see it’s also important to have some time to not worry about how things turn out and just remember to have fun. Not necessarily having the pressure of showing other people. We sometimes like to say that we aren’t good enough to do a certain thing yet, but really we will never be ‘ready’ until we just do it anyway. There’s many things like this that I have not dared to really try yet, so this is really for me! We always have to find the balance that works for us though. Trying something new, can just kind of freshen the mind sometimes, and if it doesn’t go that well just call it a warmup and it will be better the next time haha. Anyway take it for what you will, keep it up. 👍

October 13, 2020 at 11:53 pm in reply to: 100 Day Challenge: Heads and Faces-planes/structure/proportion #828056Day 32: page 4. I got a real late start today unfortunately, ran outta time. I was thinking that I tend to get distracted focusing on an arm or a leg or something instead of first getting the big gestural/structural chunks Figured out first. I probably should do more timed drawings… that would probably help me focus on the big idea.
I tried something different today, clothes! I had an enjoyable time, this is certainly an interesting different challenge for me. I know my challenge is heads, cmon this totally counts there’s heads on there haha.
I don’t do much drapery at all so the folds are pretty iffy and sloppy. I did do some of the clothed figure class but not all. I was trying my darndest to try and think of how to continue the gesture through the folds, but it didn’t always turn out. I think the main thing that’s really disappointing is that I should have really emphasized the form way more. The most important thing!! Thinking 3D is hard!!
