Did a Master Copy of the Greuze reference that Glenn shares. This is on Strathmore paper with Polychromos Burnt Sienna. I tried to focus more on the proportion than the copy. I found that I didn’t give her quite the angle or the fullness in the face as Greuze, but I think overall her proportions came out well. What do you think?
Thank you Jan! This quote is perfect! A motto I’ve been trying to follow: “Be fearlessly Authentic”
Thank you very much Ricardo. Yes very vulnerable. LOL But I think if you can learn to draw yourself honestly without prejudice you could probably draw anyone.
I love both portraits! The smile in the first really captures your spirit. As you commented, you can definitely see a difference in the two….almost like the second drawing is becoming more mature. Doing great!
I love your technique in this drawing, especially the focus on value. This really is a great piece!
Great expression!

@Ellis Lui, I just emailed you as well. Thank you so much for starting the group!
Hey Bobby!
To be honest, I’m not exactly sure, and I’m definitely open for suggestions.
What I’m hoping for is to team up to bounce off questions, ideas, methods….possibly help each other with practice ideas, setting goals etc. I’ve been trying to study the head off and on for over a year. I have made some progress, but I find that when I get stuck I put it aside for awhile. I then have to refresh before I can move ahead…I’ll get a little further then set it aside again. I’m really hoping that if I can find an accountability partner or partners that together we can work through it and make some real progress.
I’m into the anatomy portion of the head. I’m trying to be able to draw the basic skull connections from memory before I move on to the muscles. I think I’m still confused about the horizontal centerline (where within the eye socket does it land) which causes the foreheads to be off. And cheekbone (zygomatic) still throws me off too.
Love it!
May 16, 2020 at 2:40 pm in reply to: Beginning Head Drawing | Part 2: Intermediate Head Construction #533228Thank you for this Joshua. I think Mark Westermoe has been the missing link for me.
That would be great! Thank you Joshua!
May 15, 2020 at 1:04 pm in reply to: Beginning Head Drawing | Part 2: Intermediate Head Construction #531280Victoria,
I have been working on this series alongside, with Glenn Vilppu’s Constructive Head Drawing, and the Russian Drawing approach. Here’s my method…not sure if it will be helpful. The Russian Course gives the anatomy details and underlying structure. Steve and Glenn give different approaches to the construction of the head. So I’ll work through Steve’s and then if I feel stuck will move over to Glenn to get a different point of view. Then I’ll review Iliya’s Russian course for the anatomy. I have also watched Rey’s anatomy of the Head and neck, but I think Iliya really digs into the details. I’m looking for someone to work through Steve’s (or any of these head series) together to help be accountable for practice. Would you be interested?
All the Best,
Jessica
