Day 5 & 6: Caught up in busy schedules. Haven’t been able to make much progresses.
Today’s thoughts: “What is gesture?” I asked myself many times during practices. I see some saying that it’s what you “feel” about a pose or the “flow” of a pose. I found that too vague. I tried understanding it as what nature has evolved us into, the structure evolution shaped to support every living being, like the human spine and the stretches of tree branches flowing in “Ss”, intermittent “Cs” or spirally or even how river swirls. However, this became difficult when limb movements do not extend the gesture of the torso or when poses are static. How to make the poses in whole then? Let the study continue..
Tomorrow’s plan of actions:
- Study Karl Gnass’s videos about “Spirit of Pose”
- Gesture drawing x 0.5 hrs
- Draw from cast x 1
Day 6&7:

Thanks Chi, Joshua!
Yes, capturing gestures is fun and challenging! I feel that it’s like capturing the transient feeling of a pose and put them down in lines that no words can describe.
I will alternate between structured/mechanical trainings of the basic forms and loose/free capturing of gestures. Hopefully they will reinforce each other and lead to some improvements :).
