Great course but the last couple of minutes of chapter 2 is just a black screen with really high speed talking at the end!
Thanks Joshua…really helpful and spot on notes…aah I never even thought about the paintbrushes at the time. The head is my second version – I painted over the first as I got too caught up in the details and still managed to do it again a second time (although this is an improvement on the first!). One minute I had a large brush painting in the shadow shape and before I knew it – a tiny sable!
Thanks again for your notes.
Gary
Hi John
No problem – these forums are getting a lot busier these days which is great!
I agree with everyone else…a fantastic painting. Composition, colour, mood. The way the light and shadow draws your eye to the centre of interest-all wonderful!
Wow- yes, really love that portrait and have nothing much to critique at all. Maybe darker shadows in the ear…maybe but both drawings are excellent
I would do a mixture of both quick (2-3 minutes) sketches concentrating on feeling the big shapes (head/eye sockets/cheeks/ear placement etc) and then some longer 10-20 studies where you measure and be more focused – hopefully they combine in the end for your final works. Chapter 2 in Glenn Vilppu’s course has quite an interesting section where he draws a head over the skull which may help with structure/form.
Heads are annoying – especially from above or below!
I really like it – the head looks well modelled. The only thing I can maybe suggest is to perhaps darken the background on the right so theres a bit more contrast allowing the face to pop out and draw the eye a bit more – it’s currently all a similar tone.
Really good stuff.
Hi John
I like it – hope you don’t mind me suggesting a few things (just my thoughts-I’m not a professional and haven’t used pastels so these may not be any help whatsoever!).
I think you need to see the hair as larger shapes rather than individual strands and look for where the waves are in shadow and darker. Also the shadow under the chin and maybe the cheek could do with darkening to add more contrast. I also think the eye is a bit small. Ive played around in affinity photo and attach a version here with some rough alterations to show you what I was thinking.
Hope this is useful and doesn’t offend.
