Wow this looks great! The shadows look amazing and give a real sense of the form. Her back is beautiful and the shadow from her arm falls across it nicely. The only thing that throws it off is that you used white for highlight, but it seems to turn gray and be darker than the yellow paper and it throws off the lighting. Makes her look like she’s starting to become a zombie rather than the light falling on her arm.
Hey, I feel the same way about critiquing others works. I feel like such a beginner and don’t know how much value I can offer, if any. But I feel like it’s frustrating when you post and get zero response, so even a comment is good. And it’s nice to see these forums start to get some activity.
What vibrant colors in the background.
It’s interesting because you have the hands darker than the rest of the body even though they are coming forward. And looks like there is yellow light casting up onto the breast, yet not onto the hands, and some pale white light coming down on her from the top. And then there’s an extreme shadow on her right forearm. I think the lighting is confused and needs to be clarified. Like have light falling onto her face and her hands and then her body a bit more in shadow.
Really cool design in the background with the vibrant purple and the three doves.
Drawing has good proportions and is very expressive. Is this from the beginner’s course? Is it a master copy?
What a great critique! Thank you for posting these. I’m really glad NMA exists.
Is this one going up on youtube?
April 1, 2020 at 12:28 pm in reply to: Dinosaur Illustrations(Work In Progress)- Critique Appreciated #444554Yay, dinosaurs!
So you’ve got two dinosaurs here that are crawling up a hill or perhaps just hanging out on it, listening to some beats.
Good job on using the crosshatching to illustrate the forms. The dinosaur on top is done with a lot more detail and form than the bottom one. The bottom one looks like your crosshatching got a little lax.
It’s interesting visually because the dinosaur on the top is the most detailed, so we look there first, then the triceratops is less detailed, then the background is simple flat shapes, so that is pretty cool.
What courses are you working through here at NMA?
What a dramatic scene!
So it appears to be an alien creature wearing a wolf pelt on his head, standing in the rain holding a human head in his hand. He’s holding an ax type weapon in his other hand looking forward as if ready to kill again.
The color is dramatic and intense, particularly on the figure. The entire figure is covered in areas of high contrast, between the red, black, and white. The crosshatching adds a lot of business without much information, causing it to be confusing to the eye. The white highlights are also confusing, seeming to come from two directions.
I’d recommend choosing which direction the light is coming from and taking away the white highlights from the dark side.
But overall very intense and dramatic. Seems like you got a cool story there.
Hi Josseline! Thanks for the welcome!
Yes, I’ve been watching the critique videos. They are incredibly useful and are making me eager to sign up for coaching. I am amazed by how much the master artists see that beginners don’t.
That’s some great advice! I am working on getting my schedule together and being more disciplined to devote as much time as I can to my art.
What courses are you taking/have taken here at NMA? What are your goals as an artist? I see you posting in critiques and I hope to interact with you more!
Very nice to meet you!
Hello! That’s a beautiful painting!
What courses are you planning to take?
