My first influence was Michael Turner too! I used to read Witchblade and I loved his art! I read Fathom too. I love everything about the early Witchblade comics. It’s sad that such a promising artist left us so early.
I haven’t done much painting and it always amazes me when people manage to get so much color change into the skin, the purples, blues, and yellows. They are always quite surprising to me.

Wow! Great work! I especially love your fantasy artwork. It has this feel of the past but of a magical past. I hope you post more! I would love to keep up with it.
Wow, Marlon, these are some great studies! You’re gonna get really good at drawing the head.
April 12, 2020 at 10:43 am in reply to: Zach’s 100 Day Challenge: 10 Daily Value Study Thumbnails #464777These are really nice! It seems super helpful that you have the value scale at the bottom of each thumbnail. Landscapes are a good idea. I am wanting to get better at grouping values together too.
Day 3 — Here we go!
I felt some more anxiety completing these today. Had to pause and take some deep breaths. I fear that I am not able to see the value only the dark of the background and the shape of the objects. I haven’t yet decided if I’m going to keep working with these three objects or change it up. It would be interesting exploring all the minute variations of the same objects. Perhaps it will help me become more sensitive to these things?
It looks like you’re well on your way to being able to draw a figure from your imagination. It’s amazing to me that people can paint before they can draw. I mostly draw and rarely paint. I can’t wait to see how your sketchbook evolves over time. I just saw that Rey Bustos critiqued one of your sketchbook pages! Good job!
Wow, nice painting! I like the way you used the blue and purple colors in the skin.
You mentioned that you were into body building? I think that’s really cool. Just like Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell. Are they some of your influences? I feel like I can see a little from both the body building influence and the color.
Day 2 – Thumbnails
I’m still working with the same objects and trying to become aware of all the different things I could change for a composition. Such as moving the objects themselves around, changing the frame, zooming in or out, changing my own vantage point – horizontal and vertical, altering the lighting conditions using lamps or different times of day. I hope that by continuing to do the same simple thumbnail sketches I become more sensitive to these things and more sensitive in general.

Josseline — thanks for the encouragement! I can’t wait to see more of your sketchbook drawings too!
I have been struggling with the still life set up. Controlling the lighting and whatnot. It’s difficult during the day, even with the curtains closed, but I figure this is part of the learning process of understanding the workings of light and shadow.
I feel a bit behind on my thumbnails already, but here is what I’ve been doing. I feel like part of this challenge for me will be getting more proficient and controlling and understanding lighting sources.
I’m also striving for a set up where I can draw for long hours without causing back and/or neck pain.
I would love advice if anybody has some!
Ultimately I’m going to be drawing comics, but I really want to master these fundamental concepts of form, light, and shadow and it seems that doing these observational drawings is crucial.
I don’t know why images just aren’t going through right now. Maybe it’s a system error? Hopefully it will resolve soon. But I also hope they don’t all show up and make it look like I posted an obnoxious number of times.
