Beautiful drawing! I love the sensitivity of the eyes, nose, and ear. I agree with Laura in that the forehead looks like it is cracking like dried dirt. I don’t think this is what you intended and yet for me creates more interest in the drawing (that is if you were going for a surreal look). There’s an almost pained look in the eyes as if he has received some bad news and is contemplating the ramifications. The cracking in the forehead increases this feeling of pain and agony in his heart.
I feel the lips are losing some form in the middle. Yet it’s still an effective drawing because the way his lips are makes me feel like he is giving himself a moment to experience whatever he is feeling and then he’s going to return to stoicism and carry on despite his pain.
Anyways, great drawing! I hope it gets critiqued!
@joshuajacobo I think that would be a great idea too!
I am struggling with getting into a solid learning routine as well. And I wish I could take every single course! But of course, have to start with one and go from there. It is hard too figuring out what I should do, vs what I feel inclined. Like should I spend more time on rendering, when I am more inclined towards gesture drawing?
@josselinejeria I find your advice very helpful too. I am going to try and post more on here.
Thanks, Josseline…. I am trying…. But I am afraid I will never get better. Everything I make and draw is such an eye sore 🙁
That is gorgeous. I love the use of color. What media did you use?
Here are some more practice figures on iPad. The black ones from imagination and the red ones were drawing along with Vilppu.
So far I am really loving Glenn’s Renaissance drawing course. It is difficult but I love this kind of drawing.

Thanks for looking into it, Joshua! It’s been a week since I signed up now and I can’t wait to start. I figured that maybe you guys are having to expand operations because more people staying in = more sign ups and such, plus all the changes caused by the fact that we’re in a pandemic. What crazy times.
It’s interesting because at first I wasn’t to keen on online education, I was looking for some in person classes to take. But then seeing you guys do the online critiques is what made me realize that online could be just as good, if not better, than in person classes. Plus I love the library of courses you’ve put together here and the fact that you’re making this knowledge so accessible to people.
I listened to the Draftsmen podcast yesterday and they were talking about art school and whether you really needed it or not. Then I read this article back from 2013 by Noah Bradley.

Anyways, I just thought it was interesting.
Figures from imagination on iPad. I’m about to take Glenn Vilppu’s Renaissance Figure Drawing course and putting these in here as a ‘before’ pic. So here is my current ability to draw figures from imagination. I really need to work on hands and feet… and position of the head… and practically everything else. I am loving Glenn Vilppu’s teachings so far! They are so eye opening!

I also would love to see the critiques continue, like what Diane suggested.
I had only been logging into the videos occasionally the past year, but once you’ve started these critiques and the message boards started getting more activity, now I suddenly feel the NMA community.
I guess I just wasn’t on the boards much before because they seemed very quiet. It’s interesting now that I’m starting to talk more and see more of work from other NMA students, a community here I wasn’t aware of til the critiques started.
You know, what? Maybe I will!! If I do, I will post them in the sketchbook section. I haven’t looked at his art for a while. I loved Witchblade so much! Did you ever see the live action TV show they made of it? Seems like we have a lot in common.
You’re making me want to go back to Michael Turner’s art now too lol. The brush pens are nice. You getting into inking?
Hello! I signed up for a coaching program last week as well.
I have a suggestion. When somebody signs up you could send out an automatic e-mail saying “We’re processing your request and someone will reach out to you within X amount of business days.” — and then some description of what goes on to assign that person a coach? Because when I signed up, I got worried that you were shut down as well and that nobody was processing coaching requests. Even though it’s only been 5 days and 2 weekend days it just feels so much longer when you don’t leave your home.
But anyways, I love what you guys made here at NMA!
