Tonal Relationships

Hello,

I am currently learning Major/Minor key with Bill Perkins and I’m struggling a little with understanding the tonal relationships between different objects so I was hoping someone could help me a little… Basically, I have come to understand that the tonal relationships between light and shadow (the range/degree of contrast) varies based on the local value of the object and it’s reflective quality. Does the degree of contrast reduce with reflective objects whilst the contrast is sharp with less reflective objects?
