Before learning how to paint with full color palettes, artists for centuries have begun using only a mixture of black and white paint known as grisaille. In this lesson internationally renowned painter Joseph Todorovitch will teach you how to use this excellent training approach to help you learn how to mix and apply paint, simplify your subject and draw with paint, design posterize shapes for value clarity, and how to make form read correctly, all without color!

Candace, this course is dropping very soon but it is not actually complete. Someone hit the publish button on this lesson prematurely. The whole thing (42 hours worth) will be live soon.

Looks a little bit like Penelope Cruz.

Nice work, Mirian. My recommendation would be to try to design even clearer shadow to light shapes during your posterization stage.

I was focused on mark making and creating somewhat traditional brushes . I got a little lost on the structure and values but going to try some more using the process.

This is one of the best taught portrait lessons I have ever had! I am really happy to have the opportunity to take part in it. I feel as though I lost control of this Painting, though. I wanted so much to be able to get the focal area tight and the surrounding areas softer. When I realized that I was making it all too high contrast, I tried playing with values but then it felt as thoughI lost the drawing.  Right now I am stumped. I am also no good at photographing it! The contrast is much higher in the photo than in person.

Please, which size of the canvas should be used for “Grisaille Portrait Exercises “? Smaller, bigger or the size of life size of a head?

    Any advice is highly appreciated!

Really enjoying this course so far!

Should last part of the assignment – the finished portrait – be in greyscale? Or should we use color for that?
