Planes of the head, graphite, critique request

Hi!  I’ve been following the Iliya Mirochnik series on Russian drawing.  Really loving the stretched paper but I’m a little perplexed on whether I’m approaching the use of graphite correctly.  Thanks!

The planes are good. I don’t know if you have to work the transitions, but even for one value to the other, they are too hard. Also looks a little bit off center (maybe nose and mouth) and the keystone looks larger in the darkest side, so the eyes are quite far from each other!
