Mariano’s 100 Day Art Challenge

Finally decided to join this challenge in order to develop a daily discipline, even though I usually do something related to art every day.

I’m especially interested in portrait and  human figure. I’ll try it in different media, posting from basic sketches to rendered updated of them.

Day 1/100. Sketch of Dorian. Graphite on hand toned paper.

Welcome to the Challenge Mariano!  Nice sketch.  I love working on toned paper, but haven’t toned much by hand.  What paper did you start out with and what did you tone it with?

Thanks so much Erik. I use paper over 200 g/m2 (at least) tinted with Indian Ink or Fountain pen Ink. But you can try many different pigments on the paper (tea, coffee, herbs…). There is at least an example of how to get hand toned paper in NMA lessons. Checkout Sight-Size Drawing Course first lesson with leo Mancini-Hresko. Don’t forget to stretch the paper properly.

Day 2/100. Sketch of Gabrielle Cot after Bouguereau’s. Graphite on hand toned paper.

Added basic lines of Reilly Method. Eyes look  a little bit bigger than they are in the original. It can be corrected in the rendered version (or just stay as they are) depending on the mood of the day.

Day 3/100. Sketch of a Mongolian girl. Graphite on hand toned paper.

Just a basic sketch without going too deep into definition. This time the paper is highly texturized.

Day 4/100. Why not a plaster cast from the new course with Iliya?

Day 5/100. Added some more refining work to the previous cast drawing.

Still working on the general values and details.

Day 6/100. Rendering a sketch done a few days before the challenge. Working on the depth of the different planes of the face.

Day 8/100. David’s Mouth Cast Drawing. Graphite on white Sketchbook paper.

After using a cast from the NMA New Course “Plaster Cast Drawing: The Russian Approach” as a reference, I couldn’t resist to give it a go in Russian Style.

Even though I watched almost half of the previous Russian Academy’s Courses, I never tried in this style. So there we go…

Hi Mariano, the day 6 portrait is amazing! I really like it. I think I will try to mix graphite and sanguine as well. Is there any course where I could learn this technique?

How big are your David’s sketches? I studied these 3D models as well, but I think I drew them much smaller.
