Vilppu’s lessons are great aren’t they? I really like his emphasis on construction and analysis of form.
September 5, 2020 at 6:49 pm #743643Yes, they truly are! I like his approach. Since I started watching his lessons, I feel that I’m more aware of some nuances of the form.

Since September 1st, I’m also participating in a 30-day Instagram challenge; this one is about drawing from life. Although I’d like to keep those two challenges separate, for the sake of time today, I decided to kill two birds with one stone and paint an observational sketch of my sister while she was crocheting.

Your sister looks like she’s having fun 🙂! I like your nose studies; particularly the three on the left, and the middle face of the top right row has a compelling expression. The only one that doesn’t seem to follow the line of the face is the top left face in the top row of three. The face is turned, yet the nose faces straight on. I find noses quite difficult, so well done!
September 8, 2020 at 8:50 pm #750285Thanks, Deborah!
It’s hard for me to get the positions and angles right, especially when drawing the nose 😅! I also think I draw these faces very small, so it was even harder to make some details.
September 8, 2020 at 9:13 pm #750308I’ve been low energy and unfocused these last two days. Tomorrow I hope to take time to organize and establish a roadmap for my drawing/painting studies.
To make up for day 24, I made a few scribbles of my and my boyfriend’s nose while we talked on video. Better than nothing, I suppose. 🤷♀️
For the left face in the drawings for day 25, I used a reference from NMA.

I started another skull; it’s still a very rough sketch. I’m taking my time to get the forms correctly, and to me, it already seems better than the first one I did in this challenge.
It’s great to have the 3D model as the reference. I’m so happy I could upgrade my subscription and gain access to the reference material here, I loved the quality of the images and 3D models, I’m sure going to use lots of those from now on.September 11, 2020 at 2:05 pm #755656Hi Isabella. Great work on this so far! I’m assuming you’re using the reference picture from Iliya’s course? I sense you’re running out of room for the face plane. Your parallel lines for the face plane are horizontal – because the face plane is turning away, they need to slope up a little to the right of picture. That will give you more room to make the face plane longer as per the reference, make the orbits larger and the mandible longer and more forward thrusting. I hope that’s helpful 🙂.
September 11, 2020 at 8:30 pm #756302Thanks a lot, Deborah! Your insights really helped me to see what I was doing wrong. For me, it’s tough to see the planes, lines, and perspective within the organic shape of the skull. It’s like my mind goes blank in wanting to draw something quickly, and I forget to think in simple forms. I’m still not very sure if it’s 100% correct right now, but it looks better.
Also, after coming back to the drawing today, I could see how much I got the proportions wrong 😨 . I noticed something was strange before, but I couldn’t tell exactly what it was. Now, I can’t help but laugh when I see both drawings next to each other 😂.
Day 28
September 11, 2020 at 10:11 pm #756438Much better 👏🏻👏🏻 🙂! Look at the bottoms of the orbits – they need to line up too. The skull’s left orbit looks about right but the one closest to us looks too small. Isn’t it great to look back on how far we come?! Keep up the good work!

September 12, 2020 at 6:27 pm #758374Great skull!
September 12, 2020 at 9:22 pm #758613Thanks, Deborah and Joshua! I’m so happy to see my progress during this challenge 😊
Day 29
I made some corrections and decided to render the tone. But it was a little frustrating to get it right digitally. These last few days, I switched to Photoshop since it was quicker and easier to fit in my routine. I was trying to mimic the traditional process the best I could, but I don’t like how it’s turning out in this drawing. I haven’t finished it yet, but after that, I’ll probably try to go back to good old paper.
