In this lesson, instructor Larissa Marantz will lecture on the important visual elements of character design. You will learn how to use shape language to develop characters based on humans and animals. Larissa will demonstrate the techniques she has used during her successful career as an animator/illustrator. You will be given an assignment to do, you can turn it in using the assignment submission guidelines for feedback on the next session.
Join instructor Larissa Marantz for an 8-week interactive Live Class, where she will give you the basics of shape language and design principles. You will create figurative character designs based on humans, animals, and other concepts. Larissa will cover construction, form, and dynamic posing, along with development costumes, character personality, and emotional expressions to formulate believable, relatable, and appealing designs. Each week, Larissa will go through students’ submitted assignments to provide critiques and advice.
Earn a digital Certificate of Completion when you complete this Live Class and submit all assignments for review before the end of term. Certificate details will be announced mid-way through the term. Additionally, students who fulfill the certificate requirements will receive a special badge for display in the NMA community forums and Discord server.

August 22, 2021 at 12:01 pm #1695319I had to miss the class as I was stuck in meetings all Friday afternoon, but I just wanted to say that as I watched the lesson today:
I was so blown away by the work of other students in this class. I think it’s going to be really exciting to see what emerges toward the end of the eight weeks. This is SO enriching for me to be exposed to these very different thought processes from my own! I’m about 22 years out of art school. I’ve really missed what I used to get out of everybody pinning their art up on the wall and us all talking about it back in the day. So I REALLY appreciate Larissa taking the time to go through each one of the submissions! Also, I want to say that Larissa is a really brilliant designer and really does a remarkable job teaching her process. As I’ve watched each week, it has just been epiphany after epiphany for me. I’m an industrial designer by trade, but I think the design generation concepts that are being taught here are the most useful visual design principals period. This can be applied to any kind of design, but the method of delivery, the subject matter is so much fun (as opposed to a class in which we are say…concepting toaster ovens or something!) Anyway, much gratitude! Thank you, thank you thank you!!
