    Hello everyone,

I’ve got a question that might seem a bit naive but I would truly appreciate the advice. Has anyone ever planned out what courses to study in some specific order before ? I could really use some help with that since I’m quite a beginner. For instance, should I focus on the anatomy from the start or should I work on the gesture and structure courses first? Is there an order for the subjects I should follow?  I’m willing to learn about almost everything except for the oil painting and sculpturing topics.

I really recommend taking the course “A beginner’s guide to drawing” if you are new.

    I agree with Dean.

After that I’d recommend either the Russian drawing course or the Beginner Head Drawing Course.

I thought I had enough experience so I jumped right into the courses willy nilly.  Now its back to the Beginning Drawing course for me.

That’s where I am at now, the Beginning Drawing course. I’ve checked out a few drawing classes on Udemy and You Tube so far but those all seem so shallow in what they teach. I like NMA much better so far because they seem to go much more in depth and detail about everything.    I just wish I had more time to devote to these studies and not have to watch them in bits and pieces. 🙂

In a nutshell…Sheldon’s Stress Free Sketching is a nice intro, as well as the Beginners series course ( actually called the Beginning Drawing course, others have mentioned) to start with. They have very useful, fundamental information. (especially about basic shapes- minor-major keys – tonal values – etc).

Now, what I do for my “personalized curriculum” I won’t be much help with because I tend to intuitively jump from course to course based on what I feel I need to work on. I started with a Composition course, but I was too ambitious and it was too over my head. So went to Sheldon’s Stress Free Sketching, which was a great great intro. Finished that, and went into Dynamic Gesture with Glenn. I enjoyed it, completed only part of it.  I felt I needed to understand my anatomy/proportions better. So I started with an anatomy course with Glenn…did it halfway through at which point I decided I needed to take a break from it as it was a bit difficult to follow and went back the Beginner’s Series course – I completed that. Had some very useful information Now I started the Russian Academic Approach to Drawing (on the Asaro Planes of the Head part) – really really enjoying this course. If I feel I need a bit of a break, I have Color Theory lined up. I’ll loop back to Glen’s Gesture and Anatomy courses a bit later, as well as the Composition course. So, spending some time in one course, then going to another for a more diverse experience. But I’ll be completing them all eventually. And have even more lined up for the future (like Renaissance Head Drawing, Constructive Figure Drawing (has hands!), Intro to Painting, Portrait in Watercolor, Watercolor/Gouache Sketchbook, Portrait Painting for Beginners, Perspective Crash Course….and more).

Hmm..I just realized you posted this quite some time ago. How are you enjoying your courses thus far?
