Day 30. I have a newfound respect for Renoir and his landscapes. Much more difficult than it looks at first to get it looking harmonious. I tried to keep the light and shadow scheme of the figure going in the background, but I don’t think I was that successful on this attempt. The whole painting is brighter than I was going for, even after adding a ton of darker colors. I’ll try to figure it out next time. Backgrounds are probably a little easier with oil paints.
May 26, 2020 at 8:47 am #552020It’s great to see the improvement since the beginning of your challenge! It’s a very interesting challenge, bravo! Bonne continuation, à bientôt!

May 26, 2020 at 6:18 pm #552817You’re really finding your feet with skin and shadow colours. Great job! The environment is a great addition. I like the blue; the only thing that distracts my eye from the figure is the white cloth, because it is the lightest value in the whole composition. Also, even if it’s not in the reference photo, maybe consider putting the upper bent arm into some shadow so the forearm reads in front of it. Keep it up 🙂
May 26, 2020 at 6:25 pm #552826Thank you Deborah. I will work on your suggestions in the next one 🙂
May 27, 2020 at 11:45 am #554288May 28, 2020 at 7:02 am #555778Day 32. I have a new strategy today. I’m working on canvas pad because I didn’t like the way the pastels soaked the paper on my last painting. Also, I’m planning on using oil paints to complete the background because it was too time consuming, difficult, and expensive with oil pastels. I’m also using Nitram charcoal for the first time. There is a bit of a learning curve getting used to the new materials. This is my progress so far on the drawing stage.

It might give you some new possibilities with the background. Anyway, great work with the challenge amd congrats for reaching 1/3 of it!
May 28, 2020 at 12:55 pm #556248Thank you Andre. I will keep that in mind for next time. I really like your landscapes.

May 28, 2020 at 4:55 pm #556506Thank you Deborah 🙂I’m not sure how it will end up because I’m trying out an entirely new process, but it’s been fun experimenting.

I think the white drapery works well here because it’s part of the figure, whereas on your previous one, it was just sitting next to her and wasn’t related. Does that make sense? The folds are working well too. I don’t know what your colour intentions are, but this simple colour scheme is really nice. Whatever you end up doing will be nice too. PS is my Australian spelling of ‘colour’ driving you nuts 😆?! It comes up quite a bit on this forum 🙂!
