Day 67,
Today I did some ballpoint pen sketches from the new reference libraries showing the different types of skulls. I’ve heard the differences referenced in so many anatomy lectures throughout the past few years, but its so useful to have reference images to compare the features, so these additions are much appreciated!

Today I decided to do some more Bridgman studies, along with some invented skeletons based on some of his figure drawings. While this isn’t specifically portrait related, I’m interested in using Bridgman as a means for better understanding the way that forms interlock, and developing my invention and simplification skills, all skills that will lend themselves well to my invented and/or more stylized portraits. As an added bonus, sketching with the G-nib without a pencil drawing is helping my dexterity and forcing me to be more economical in my mark making.

Today I did some Bridgman inspired costumed figure drawing from my own photo library, limiting the time to three minutes each(with the exception of the colour, added in acrylic ink afterwards for some additional visual interest). I’m really liking the idea of using abstract and small marks to indicate, rather than elaborately convey detail.

Today I did a speed paint of a portrait, limiting myself to twenty minutes. As I don’t paint nearly as much as I draw, I’m happy that I’m starting to think less about minute details, and more about large planes and value relationships. I limited myself to a monochromatic palette, but I’m really fascinated about how varying between saturated tints/shades and neutrals can be used to suggest different temperatures all without using more than one hue. I got a little carried away with the rim lights on the hair, but overall, what was interesting is that none of the other values got very far past the 50% range, yet there is readable contrast, which is something I want to explore in future portraits!

Today I continued to adjust my editorial portrait of India’s Prime Minister Modi, removing the patterning on the clothing that takes away from the focus on the face, and improving upon the structures of the head. It’s still got a long way to go, but I’m starting to see the likeness improve, which is really important for this type of portrait in particular!

Today I continued to work on my portrait of actress Zendaya Coleman, mostly testing some notan an relationships. I still need to improve on the structure, but right now I’m experimenting with exaggerating the temperature of the cheek region to communicate a sense of warmth and energy. This playing up of the red of the cheeks and nose is very popular in my particular field of illustration right now, but I am still interested in a likeness and some sense of realism, so I will look to apply some of the lessons I am learning from Theodor Todorovitch’s portrait painting class as a I continue to experiment and refine!

Today I decided to try and replicate the process that I’ve seen so far in Joseph Todorovitch’s portrait series, only instead I tried using some of the oil painting brushes I have for procreate. I’m really happy to see that the same principles essentially apply! I will definitely continue to practice massing in areas of darks, as I love how Joeseph blocks in the entire shadow area before adding some subtle indications for areas like the eyes. I’m only a couple lessons in, so this exercise is only as far as the shadow massing for the most part.

Today I thought Id try something completely different, but nonetheless head drawing/portrait related. I decided to apply the knowledge i’ve been accumulating about the human skull and see if I could make sense of the skull of one of our ape ancestors. My brother is an anthropology student, and supplies me with some great reference of human and proto human skulls! I unfortunately can’t remember the name of this specimen, but drawing it certainly got my brain working to problem solve and see if I could identify some of the important landmarks I’ve learned here on NMA!

Today I challenged myself to draw like Kim Jung Gi with just a brush pen and no construction sketch, which was really difficult! I definitely think that doing this exercise is improving my dexterity though, so I expect to do a few more of these freehand timed portraits in the future!
