The Bust of Brutus Scan

Description:

This plaster cast was taken from the marble bust of Brutus which was sculpted by Michelangelo in 1540 after the defeat of the Republic of Florence. Michelangelo intended Brutus to have a heroic appearance as a symbol of opposition to tyranny. De Tolnay states, “Michelangelo’s conception of Brutus is clearly expressed in this bust: It represents heroic scorn for those who would destroy liberty.” The bust was commissioned by Donato Giannotti for Cardinal Niccolò Ridolfi and now resides in the Bargello museum in Florence.
